Once the initial shock of the request wore off, Joseph and Shanna Weight knew for sure that they wanted to make their adopted son’s sister a part of their family. The Elk Ridge Utah couple was married for nine years before they decided to adopt. Two weeks after signing up in August 2012, they brought home their adopted son Milo.
Milo’s birth mom was only 18-years-old when she decided to place him for adoption.“She was a young mom and she had grown up with a lot of siblings from a lot of different fathers,” Joseph Weight told Good Morning America. “She never knew her dad so she wanted her child to have something better than what she had.”
The Weights biological son Nash was born 2 years after that.
“Milo, he was kind of the perfect first child,” Shanna Weight said. “He was our entire world. I can’t explain what he’s done for our lives. Nash’s exuberance and fun keep us on our toes.”
The Weights were not expecting to get a call from A Act of Love Adoptions agency over a year after Nash was born.
The agency wanted to know if the couple was willing to adopt Milo’s biological sister.
“They contacted us and said, ‘Milo is going to be a big brother’ and asked if we would consider adopting his sister,’” Joseph Weight said. “At the time I was like, ‘That’s a big one.’”
The family took the weekend to think it over.
“I was in utter shock. We were not financially prepared at all to adopt a baby. My first thought was like, ‘We can’t do this,’” said Shanna Weight told Inside Edition.
“But if she was supposed to come home with us, all the other stuff doesn’t matter and it will work itself out.”
They did a lot of praying that weekend and ultimately decided that they were meant to be the little girl’s parents.
Milo got to meet his biological mother when she came down to stay near the family before her delivery.
“[Milo] was really excited to meet her and she was so sweet with him and just told us how grateful she was and she thought we had done such a good job with Milo and that she was so happy we had decided to take Onni,” Shanna said. “She felt really good that they would be together with a family that she felt comfortable with.”
Onni Pearl was born on Feb. 25, 2019, and she looks a lot like her brother. They share the same dimples.
Shanna says she feels blessed that Onni and Milo’s birth mom trusted her with her children.
“I felt very grateful that she would give us the opportunity to also parent one of [Milo’s] siblings,” Shanna Weight told GMA. “I think how courageous [their birth mom] was to recognize that they needed something more than she could give them. She was very selfless in what she did.”
“I’m thankful every single day that she chose us and felt like we’d be good parents.”
